September 8, 2024: Up in the Air

After 30 years of service at Travis Air Force Base, the training flight of KC-10 Extender Tail No. 001948 was one of the last for the base's KC-10 fleet.

It is one of the few KC-10s left at Travis and, in less than a month, it will be flown to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona where it will be stored along with hundreds of other aircraft.

“When you go down there and see the airplanes, it’s cool, but sad at the same time,” boom operator and instructor Master Sgt. Danny Fortier of the 70th Air Refueling Squadron said, who was in the aircrew that delivered a previous Travis KC-10 there.

Travis is the last active-duty wing to operate the KC-10, which is being replaced by the KC-46 Pegasus air tanker, some of which are already flying missions with Travis aircrew.

The mixed 60th Air Mobility Wing/349th Air Mobility Wing crew flew the KC-10 over the Northern California and Southern Oregon recently.
