August 6, 2022: They Speak for the Trees

Berkeley's People's Park is one of the last remaining symbols of the Free Speech Movement in the 60's. Around 50 years ago, protestors fought the National Guard and Ronald Reagan to halt construction and claim the park. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, construction began to build housing for UC Berkeley students, 25% of whom claim they do not live in Berkeley. After clashes with the police, demonstrators broke through the barriers, halted construction and reclaimed the park. I stopped by to see what remained: Fallen trees, destroyed construction equipment, and the Underpass Brass Band played for the park's current residents, the unhoused.
